WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF OLIVE OIL ?
Olive oils most commonly available for consumption are labelled as below:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil - the best available, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and has a superior taste.
Virgin Olive Oil - from lower quality olives. Has acidity between 0.8 and 2%, and judged to have a good taste.
Ordinary Virgin Olive Oil - as above but slightly lower quality, with acidity between 2 and 3.3%.
Olive Oil, 100% Pure Olive Oil, Pure Olive Oil - poorer quality refined olive oils, sometimes blended with some virgin oils. Refined olive oils have been treated to remove defects and achieve acceptable taste.
Light Olive Oil, Extra Light Olive Oil - as the category above, but undergoes more processing, refining and filtering to retain only a very mild olive flavour.
